Structural Engineer

Technical Services Staff Codes & Standards Development

Position Summary:

The position of Technical Services Staff includes responsibility to perform a variety of professional duties of a technical and often complex nature, relating to code and standard development and related member and client services. The individual provides internal professional and technical support to ICC staff, both within and outside the Technical Services department, and has frequent telephonic, written, and direct personal contact with members, customers, and the public.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Staff Liaison: The key responsibility will be providing structural engineering technical support as the staff liaison for ICC's International Residential and Building Code development committees as well as ICC Standards. This includes:
  • The review and development of code/standard language that is concise, accurate, and consistent with other code/standard provisions
  • Participation at ICC's Committee Action and Public Comment Hearings
  • Working with publications staff to ensure the accuracy of published code/standard documents
  • Assisting in, and supporting the development of Commentaries and other code/standard related publications of ICC
  • In addition to acting as a staff liaison to code and standards committees, technical staff:
  • Assist members with code/standard interpretations and related questions
  • Representing ICC at meetings and conferences
  • Serving on internal and external committees
  • Performing Plan Reviews for code compliance
  • Assist in educational content development, and conducting ICC seminars as an instructor
  • Serving as a technical resource for other ICC departments and functions
  • Perform other technical and administrative duties as assigned

Essential Skills and Education / Experience:

  • Baccalaureate in Civil Engineering, with a structural emphasis.
  • Current professional licensure/registration in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional structural experience in a building jurisdiction, professional association/company or code enforcement
  • Ability to demonstrate sound working knowledge of building code development, application, and/or enforcement
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and customer service skills
  • Travel required approximately 10%, both locally and nationally
