International Code Council (ICC)

Technical Editor

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Editor reviews documents critically for matters of tone, style, flow, word choice, point of view, consistency, factual accuracy, suitability of graphic elements, even legal problems the document might pose. The Editor will suggest ways an author could retool his/her data and information for many other purposes. In addition to the copyediting aspects of the job (grammar, spelling, syntax, sentence structure, and the general mechanics of good prose style), the Editor looks at diction: the choice of words and the meanings they deliver. Additionally, the Editor serves in the capacity of proofreader.

The Editor does a thorough review of the language, assessing whether it: unintentionally insults or misrepresent readers (political correctness); contains unexamined assumptions; shows a bias; or contains jargon, clichs, or slang. He or she also examines the related graphical and tabular elements, ensuring that the information provided does not contradict the text.

The Editor works in tandem with the Typesetter, author and/or subject matter expert to produce the completed work. The Editor may also be asked to serve as the subject matter expert. Editors may be asked to work on code books, commentaries, catalogs, brochures, textbooks, workbooks, training manuals, annual reports, and more. The Editor must have a superior grasp of the English language and editorial skills (including use of proofreader's marks) and, by virtue of education and experience, be able to work on a variety of projects simultaneously. A working knowledge of print terminology (both print and digital), markup languages, content management systems, and the Chicago Manual of Style is necessary, as is proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Edit (mechanical and substantive) documents to improve clarity in accordance with appropriate style.
  • Research, rewrite and edit text for codes, commentaries, textbooks, assorted newsletters, proposals, and promotional materials.
  • Resolve any queries with author or subject matter expert. Work in a team environment with authors, typesetters and graphic designers.
  • Ensure that the document's structure reflects the hierarchy of the content (i.e., more important information should precede secondary information).
  • Where appropriate, verify by spot checking that navigational aids such as cross-references and links are accurate and functional.
  • Must have a working knowledge of markup languages and be able to work in a content management environment.
  • Stay abreast of new and emerging language and cultural shifts that are used within the industry, as well as relevant laws regarding defamation, libel and copyright.
  • Oversee the design elements of a project, including graphics, layout, widows/orphans, typography, white space, use of color, and the physical features of print documents (such as paper and binding).
  • Coordinate multiple editing projects simultaneously in a deadline-oriented atmosphere.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proofread manuscripts; check that illustrations, tables, labels and captions are correct and follow editorial templates.
  • Take responsibility for signing off final Blueline / printer's proofs.
  • Track and record project status.
  • Be able to convert between English and Metric measures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; AND one- to two-years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.  Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.  Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
