Publications Production Technician



The Publications Production Technician lays out text and illustrations to produce a finished document ready for output. The output may be delivered in several formats, including but not limited to print, .pdf, .rtf, XML, HTML, ePUb and Word.


It is the Publications Production Technician's job to choose the correct fonts, styles, justification, paragraph, line, word and letter spacing; to make sure illustrations meet specified criteria for printing (e.g., resolution); to ensure good presentation and readability; to create complex tables; and to check for consistency of style. Skills needed include typing; use of word processing and page composition software; and a good eye for detail. They need to work with master style sheets, tagging styles, program scripts, hierarchy structure, and a variety of print specifications. The Publications Production Technician also works with FTP software, drop boxes, "Robocopy" and other mechanisms used to transfer digital files.


Publications Production Technician typically work on a variety of simultaneous projects, including code books, commentaries, brochures, textbooks, workbooks, training manuals, and more. They also work directly with editors, vendors, authors and IT professionals. A working knowledge of print terminology (both print and digital) and proofreader's marks is required, as is proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and various publishing software (e.g., FrameMaker, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat Professional).



  • Resolve any queries with editor. Work in a team environment with editors and graphic designers.
  • Coordinate multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-oriented atmosphere.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, FrameMaker, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, CorelDraw and other software as needed.
  • Proficiency with Structured FrameMaker in applying Document Type Definitions (DTD) to Existing Element Definition Documents (EDD).
  • Have an understanding of using content management databases and XML markup language.
  • Convert photographs and drawings into digital images and then be able to manipulate such images as required.
  • Typeset page layouts using text, tables, figures and equations. Design new layouts as required.
  • Tag content for use in digital and web publishing. Be able to follow formal hierarchy and naming structures, and apply master style sheets and various tag styles.
  • Create and apply typographical specifications to meet customer and printer requirements.
  • Calibrate and control color where appropriate.
  • Output files to a variety of digital or print formats.
  • Understand the prepress process and be able to embed fonts, special characters and other "backmatter" as required.
  • Manage files in accordance with ICC naming conventions; add metadata as required.
  • Track and record project status.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.



  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six-months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
