Senior Graphic Designer - Publications


POSITION SUMMARY:   The Senior Graphic Designer determines how best to present information so that it is eye catching, appealing, organized and appropriate for the particular audience. He or she combines art and technology to communicate ideas through images, layout, and printed and digital formats. The Senior Graphic Designer will contribute artwork to code books, commentaries, trade books, catalogs, letterhead, business cards, brochures, textbooks, workbooks, training manuals, annual reports, and more. Graphics are created and manipulated using a variety of software packages, including CAD, CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Illustrator CC, Acrobat DC, InDesign, Bridge, QuarkXpress, PhotoShop, SketchUp Pro (3D), Acrobat Professional, and PhotoPaint.

When provided with approved copy in Word or a hand-drawn sketch, the Senior Graphic Designer creates brochures, layouts and promotional pieces, ensuring reproduction of all copy. The designer must be able to conceptualize final images when given limited data and translate the data into electronic media as redrawn Vector art. Through the use of images, text and color, the Senior Graphic Designer transforms statistical data into visual graphics and diagrams, thereby making complex ideas more accessible. He or she needs to understand the differences between digital versus commercial press output and 4/color versus PMS color systems.

When provided with a basic sketch and a few mechanical parameters, the Senior Graphic Designer prepares routine layouts, detail drawings, assembly drawings, and diagrams using CAD or SketchUP software. Details of each technical drawing will include views and dimensions necessary for reader comprehension.

The Senior Graphic Designer is responsible for creating book covers from scratch, including the determination of appropriate spine width. He or she also makes recommendations as to the ring size of correlating binders, when required and outputs designs to a variety of formats, including CD, PDF, JPG. The Senior Graphic Designer understands preflight and lays out projects with an eye to avoiding extra costs and extra time.

The Senior Graphic Designer must have a working knowledge of printing equipment and, by virtue of education and experience, be able to work on a variety of projects simultaneously. A working knowledge of print terminology (both print and digital), markup languages, content management systems, and the Chicago Manual of Style is necessary, as is proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Keeping abreast of changes in commercial and digital print procedures is also required. Ideally, the Senior Graphic Designer will be able to proofread technical prose during overflow situations.


  • Meet with clients and ICC Staff to determine the scope of a project
  • Create designs either by hand or using computer software packages
  • Select colors, images, text style, and layout
  • Demonstrate strong command of typography and color. Understand and apply scanning techniques
  • Develop graphics and visual images for product illustrations, logos, and web sites
  • Where appropriate, create from scratch or use stock photography and Clip Art to enhance designs
  • Create three-dimensional technical images on request
  • Have a solid understanding of drafting techniques and familiarity with engineering terminology. Has familiarity with CAD equipment and relationship of CAD to three-dimensional art. 
  • Retouch/correct photographs to enhance display
  • Incorporate changes recommended by the clients into the final design
  • Produce cover art, brochures, flyers, logos, booklets, letterhead, stationary, notepads, promotional items, web art, 3D illustrations, line art, and create print specifications for such products
  • Stay abreast of new and emerging cultural and political shifts affecting design, as well as international implications of color and design
  • Create the design elements of a project, including graphics, layout, widows/orphans, typography, white space, use of color, and the physical features of print documents (such as paper and binding)
  • Collaborate in the design process by offering customers multiple solutions in conceptual models, layouts and themes, with a focus on balancing typography and design
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-oriented atmosphere
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Review designs for errors before printing or publishing them; be focused on quality control
  • Take responsibility for signing off final design-related Blueline / printer's proofs related to graphic design
  • Track and record project status
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested


  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; AND one- to two-years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
